Saruwakacho is a theater town located north of Sensoji Temple, where all the theaters in Edo City gather. Because of its proximity to Yoshiwara, the area is bustling with activity even after dark. It is said that the name Saruwakacho was taken from the name of Kanzaburo Saruwaka, the head of the Nakamura-za, the founder of Edo Kabuki.
猿若町は浅草寺の北側にある江戸市中の芝居小屋が集まる芝居町。吉原に近いこともあって、日暮れにもかかわらず大いににぎわっている。猿若町という町名は、江戸歌舞伎の祖・中村座の座長・猿若勘三郎の名からとったとされている。
