「みつまた」とは、隅田川、小名木川、箱崎川のことで「わかれ」とは、海水と淡水の境界。かつては一大歓楽街が形成されていた中州も度重なる洪水のため、広重の頃には葦の生い茂る湿地帯に変わり豊かな水路を取り戻し、新たな冨士見の名所となっていた。
