The turtles hanging in the troughs are for sale, but they are not for pets or food, they are sold to be released. This is called "Houjoe," an event that has been held at Hachimangu shrines all over Japan since ancient times to return live animals to nature in order to cherish all life, discourage killing, and pray for peace in later life. Since ancient times, this event has been held mainly at Hachimangu shrines all over Japan. The animals released are mainly birds and fish, which were purposely sold for this event.
桶につるされた亀は売り物だがペットでも食用でもなく、放すために売られている。 これは「放生会（ほうじょうえ）」といって「万物の生命をいつくしみ、殺生を戒め、後生の安寧を願うために、生きた動物を自然に返す」古来全国の八幡宮を中心に行われてきた行事。 放たれるのは主に鳥や魚類で、この行事のためにわざわざ売りに出されていた。
