The Kaikyoin was built to memorialize those who lost their lives in big Fire of Meireki, the largest fire in Edo, and sumo wrestling was held in the precincts to raise money. From the turret where the drumming to attract visitors echoes, you can see the Yanagi Bridge on the other side of the river and Mt. Fuji.
