The navy-blue noren store name is the center of Edo's commerce, with large stores lining the street from the front: Tabataya, Masuya, and Shimaya.
In front of the store are two geisha with a small woman as their attendant.
Professor Henry Smith of Columbia University described the scene: "They may have been returning from a shamisen entertainment at a nearby large store. Sake may have been served in the tatami room. Her kimono and gait were disheveled. This is what I interpreted."
紺暖簾の屋号は手前から田端屋、升屋、嶋屋と大店が軒を連ねる江戸の商業の中心地。
店の前には芸者が二人、供の小女を連れている。
この場面をコロンビア大学のヘンリー・スミスは「近くの大店で三味線の余興を披露した帰りでもあろうか。座敷で酒がふるまわれたのであろう。 着物にも足どりにも乱れが感じられる。」と解釈する。
