Walking behind the pilgrims at Zojoji Temple was a vigilante group disguised as an alms-gathering group called "Nanatsu Bouzu" (seven monks, so called because they went on a pilgrimage at 4:00 p.m.), which was a specialty of Edo, and they went around the city defeating rowdy people.
増上寺詣りの人々の後ろを歩くのは、江戸の名物だった増上寺の修行僧による「七つ坊主(七つ-午後4時に行脚にでるため、そう呼ばれた)」という托鉢に見せかけた自警団で、市中のならず者や喧嘩に渇を入れて回ったのだという。
